Mobility Moshpit 26
✨ Hello pioneering minds!
The Lab of Thought wants to challenge the way we think and act about mobility and the spaces we live in. We love to question the narratives that have shaped our motonormative mindset and explore alternative ways of seeing, thinking, and doing. Curious? Let's go!
TESTING A JUST STREET IN NIJMEGEN
From 15 to 17 April, Treubstraat in Hatert, Nijmegen, was temporarily transformed as part of the Week of the Just Street. For three days, space was rebalanced: less room for traffic, and more for greenery, play and social life. Together with residents, local businesses and organisations, a range of ideas were tested directly on the street — from planting and seating to safer spaces for children.
The event offered a tangible glimpse of what streets can become when designed around people rather than vehicles. At the same time, it functioned as a real-life experiment, helping identify what works, what doesn’t, and what could be improved.
The insights gathered will feed into the ongoing “Street Tailored to Fit” programme in Hatert and beyond. Curious to explore more or get involved?

MAKING SPACE TOGETHER IN ROETERSSTRAAT
In recent months, the Roeters Maakt Ruimte initiative has been exploring how streets can become more than corridors for movement. Bringing together students, residents and local organisations, the project has focused on rethinking public space as a place for meeting, learning and everyday life — not just transit.
Through experiments, workshops and temporary interventions, participants tested new ways of using the street. From social activities to spatial redesigns, the aim was to understand how small changes can reshape how space is experienced and shared. Public space, after all, is not fixed — it is continuously shaped by how we use it.
The project shows that reimagining streets starts with collective action. Curious to see the ideas, outcomes and next steps?

TOWARDS AUTONOMOUS CHILDHOODS: A WALKING SCHOOL BUS EXPERIMENT IN HAARLEM
Children from the age of 8 should be able to travel to school independently. That’s why, during the Week of the Just Street, four schools in Haarlem are experimenting with a new way of going to school together.
Instead of being driven, children walk along a set route with “stops,” turning a routine journey into a shared moment of independence, connection, and fun.
By walking together, they experience a more autonomous way of moving through the city, while reducing car dependency and contributing to healthier, more social streets. Along the way, they build confidence, strengthen friendships, and rediscover the street as a space for everyday life.
