MOving the window From unthinkable to radical
In order to make the unimaginable imaginable we use experimentation. In this way we are able to move the Overton window from Unthinkable to Radical. The experiments we execture are unsollicited and originate from the work we do and the papers we publish. Some fieldlabs are new, some are running and some are ready to be handed over to the commons.
Zebra printing machine
What kind of experiment can fundamentally alter the character of a street? One bold approach: install a massive zebra crossing—created using a bicycle-powered printer. This unconventional intervention reclaims space, disrupts routine expectations, and invites public reflection on how streets are used and who they serve. Here’s how it was done.
The Summer sacrifice
In Western society, we lack a culture of stopping. To stop is often framed negatively—as failure, loss, or surrender. This mindset makes it profoundly difficult to disengage from deeply ingrained habits, such as car use. Ceasing to drive is rarely treated as a deliberate, meaningful act; it’s not simply a practical decision, but one that challenges identity and social norms. Should such a shift happen spontaneously, or does it require a ritualized act of departure? These questions are explored with striking insight and theatrical brilliance in The Summer sacrifice, a compelling production by De Warme Winkel.
The Week of the just street
Each year, on the same day, a familiar ritual unfolds: the national statistics bureau releases the annual traffic fatality figures. The media responds predictably—inviting the usual experts for a routine, circular debate that resembles Groundhog Day. The discussion remains stagnant, often focused on technical fixes, individual behavior, or victim-blaming, rather than addressing the systemic injustices embedded in our streetscapes. We decided to shift the narrative. That’s why we have launched The Week of the Just Street—a campaign to reframe the conversation around fairness, accountability, and the right to safe public space for all.

Science based activism with different flavors
The LAB of THOUGHT
is an independent global platform that brings together leading academics, policymakers, interest groups, and businesses to fundamentally rethink the development of our cities. Through a combination of education, experimental environments, and real-world applications, we cultivate innovative thinking and facilitate strategic knowledge exchange. Our mission is to drive systemic, scalable change—translating insight into action to create more equitable, resilient, and sustainable urban futures.
Expanding the Boundaries of Public Imagination
Our ambition is not driven by scale for its own sake, but by the recognition that the challenges we address are universal in nature.
We do not offer definitive solutions, promote alternative dogmas, or propose new absolutes. Instead, we ground our work in rigorous scientific research, using it as the basis for unsolicited provocations that challenge assumptions and open new pathways for exploration.
Our purpose is to generate insights, spark critical reflection, and foster the capacity to imagine—and shape—alternative futures.
The LAB of Practice
Transitioning toward new and alternative futures is inherently challenging. Embedding new ways of thinking and implementing innovative methodologies demands both time and sustained effort. Recognizing this, we provide targeted support to communities, municipalities, and policymakers—guiding them through the critical early phases of transition. Our approach ensures that organizations build the capacity, resilience, and momentum needed to navigate complexity and drive meaningful, lasting change.
Turning Insight into Action
We deliver strategic consultancy services to equip stakeholders in the public domain with the head start necessary to drive urgent transitions. Our objective is clear: to transform the teams and organizations we support into learning-driven, self-organizing units capable of independently designing, executing, and sustaining transition strategies. By building internal capacity, we ensure that change is not only initiated—but owned, adapted, and scaled from within.
The LAB of YOU
Changing the world is an ambitious endeavor—and The Lab of Thought cannot achieve it alone. The good news is, we are not alone. We are supported by a growing community of individuals who are committed to influencing mobility policy, reimagining public spaces, and transforming the cities and streets we all share.
Means power to you
we aim to empower citizens, activists, and local leaders with the knowledge, tools, and methodologies needed to drive tangible change. We believe that every individual effort matters—and together, these efforts form a force capable of reshaping our urban futures. The community is still in its early stages, but our ambition is clear:
to build a powerful network, provide high-quality education, and offer practical resources to enable action at every level.
The Lab of You will launch in Q3 2025.
